Fun Home Activities To Keep Your Child Active
                                     By: Coach Tatom

Your child on average receives 50+ minutes of activity a day while at school depending on what grade they are in. At least 30 minutes of that time is spent in P.E; stretching, running, and playing games that work on a variety of skills that improves muscle strength, hand eye coordination, and much more. Being active is large part of staying healthy, so as your child(ren) is/are home during this time it is important that they stay active for at least 30 minutes a day. Below are some activities that your child(ren) can do while at home to keep them active:
K-4th:
  • Different Variations of Tag:
    • Ball Tag
    • Banana Tag
    • Freeze Tag
    • Flashlight Tag (Done in the dark)
  • Catch with any type of ball
  • Nature walks
  • Ride their bikes/skateboards/rollerblades/etc
  • Run laps around the house
  • Do house hold chores/help with farm work
  • K-4th will also be working on a t-ball (K-2) and softball (3-4) unit as soon as we come back, so if you have an old bat and ball lying around the house this would be a great time to teach them how to catch, throw, and hit.
5th-8th Grade Activities:
                                                                            *Important Note*
Presidential Fitness testing will begin as soon as school is back in session, so it is important that if your child is in one of those grades that they work on form, strength, and endurance for those tests. Their grades will depend on their performance, not participation. The following will be tested: pushups (one minute), sit ups (one minute), mile run (timed distance), shuttle run (timed sprint), and sit n reach (flexibility). Here are some activities I recommend your child does to do well on these tests:

  • Push-ups (as many as they can do each day.)
  • Sit-ups (as many as they can do a day)
  • Jog for 10 minutes
  • Stretch every day, especially have them sit and reach for both of their feet at the same time.
  • Run two, quick, 30ft sprints.
  • We will also be starting a softball unit when they come back, so have them practice catching, throwing, and hitting if at all possible.
  • House chores and farm work are also a great way to build strength and endurance.
Staying active is easier than your child might think. Sports, hiking, riding bicycles, and chores are all a great way to stay active and remain physically fit, so make sure your child doesn’t turn into a couch potato during this time, and keep them active for at least 30 minutes a day.

Thank You,
